SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Runners turned out Saturday morning at USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C., for the 11th Josh Lee Memorial 5K, a race that was pushed back two weeks after forecasts called for heavy rain and wind on its original date of Oct. 10.

The course started from the G.B. Hodge Center on campus. The race honors Josh Lee, a Spartans cross country runner and scholar-athlete who was killed in a car crash with fellow Upstate student-athletes on Oct. 11, 2015.

Money raised goes to the Josh Lee Memorial Scholarship, which his family set up in 2015. Each year it goes to one man and one woman on the Upstate cross country and track and field roster who are rising sophomores in good standing with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Organizers planned age-group awards for male and female runners, with each group winner taking home a race mug, a journal and socks.

The race set records a year ago, with 490 people signed up, 293 finishers and more than $120,000 raised for the scholarship. Its first edition was staged in 2016 at the Mighty Moo Festival in Cowpens, and it later relocated to the Upstate campus.
