SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Runners in Spartanburg get to flip a horror-movie script Tuesday night, Oct. 27, when Rockers Run Club stages its sixth annual Chase the Clown run and the pack hunts down a runner in a clown mask instead of fleeing one.

The free group run leaves Rockers Brewing Company on West Main Street at 6 p.m. and loops back to the brewery for a social hour. This year the route winds through the Hampton Heights neighborhood, with a choice of three or four miles. Runners of every pace are welcome, and costumes are encouraged, though organizers suggest real running shoes.

The tradition began in 2021, when a fast runner showed up for a costume run in an evil clown mask and the rest of the club ended up chasing him through Converse Heights. The club has repeated the stunt every Halloween season since.

Rockers is one of several free, community-led run clubs in the city, and it meets every Tuesday at 6 p.m. at 226-A West Main Street. Parking downtown can be tight outside the public garages, so arriving early is a good idea.
