SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A 57-year-old Wellford man riding an e-bike died Thursday night after a pickup truck struck him on Campground Road in Spartanburg County, S.C., the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said Geoffrey Berus was traveling in the eastbound lane near Knightsridge Road at about 7:17 p.m. when a 2004 Dodge pickup hit him. Emergency crews took him to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, and he died there at about 8:20 p.m., roughly an hour after the crash.

The pickup driver was not hurt. The Highway Patrol has not announced any charges or said what led to the collision, and the crash remains under investigation by troopers.

Berus was riding in the roadway itself when he was struck, according to troopers, who classified him as a pedestrian in their report on the Thursday evening crash.
