# DIY Bathroom Refresh Under $200

> Don't skip backer rod behind the caulk on tub edges — it's the difference between a 2-year job and a 10-year job. Recaulk + regrout + fixture swap.

A full bathroom remodel runs $8,000-$15,000 in Spartanburg. A refresh — new caulk, cleaned grout, and swapped fixtures — runs under $200 and buys you another 5-10 years before the real remodel.

**The three moves**

1. **Strip and recaulk every silicone joint.** Old caulk is the #1 source of bathroom water damage in Upstate homes. Humidity + soap residue = mildew inside the bead. Use a utility knife and a caulk-removal tool. Go all the way to clean tile or tub surface.

2. **Backer rod behind the caulk on tub edges.** This is the Eric G tip that separates a 2-year job from a 10-year job. Backer rod is a foam cord that fills the deep gap between tub and tile. Without it, you are asking silicone to span a 1/2-inch void — it cracks within 18 months. With it, the caulk sits in a shallow U-shape and lasts a decade.

3. **Regrout + seal.** Clean old grout lines with a grout saw, re-apply sanded grout, wait 72 hours, then brush on a penetrating grout sealer. Aqua Mix Sealer’s Choice is widely available at the Home Depot on Asheville Hwy.

**Fixture swap** — A new Moen single-handle shower valve trim kit (not the rough-in, just the trim) is $60-$90 and installs with the old rough-in still in the wall. Pair with a matching faucet and the room reads like a remodel at 3% of the cost.
