Spartanburg Gears Up for a Day of Service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Hey there, Spartanburg! Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dig in for a great cause this coming January 20, 2025, as the community comes together to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a special trail building and cleanup event at the stunning Upper Chinquapin Greenway. It’s not just another day off; it’s a chance to give back!

When and Where

Mark your calendars for this exciting event which will take place from 9-11 a.m.. The location? Right at the Upper Chinquapin Greenway, conveniently situated across from the Milliken Research Center. This beautification effort is part of the wider community-wide **MLK Day of Service**, where neighbors unite to enrich our local environment.

What You Can Do

Volunteers will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty in two main ways—they can either help with picking up litter or dive into the construction of a new trail. This upcoming trail will stretch about 100 yards from the end of Crockett Street in the Hilltop community to a welcoming picnic area within the greenway, allowing for beautiful views and community gatherings.

At the moment, the access points to the Upper Chinquapin Greenway are limited. The existing trailhead can be found via Graham Road or from the Willows Apartments on Mosspoint Circle. With the creation of this new trail, community members will enjoy *additional* access to the greenway, which is walk-in only from Hilltop. It’s all about making our green spaces more accessible to everyone!

What to Expect

Worried about the heavy lifting? No problem at all! The dedicated staff at SPACE will be handling any major cutting with chainsaws, ensuring safety while volunteers focus on removing debris and raking the new trail bed. And guess what? If we can get enough enthusiastic volunteers on board, there’s even the possibility of developing a new trail loop near the apartment complex. How exciting is that?

Getting Involved

If you’re feeling inspired and want to join in, it’s super easy! Just shoot an RSVP over to deb@spartanburgconservation.org, and plan to meet at 423 Graham Road at 9 a.m. on January 20. You’ll be joining a whole host of community members who are just as excited to make a difference!

The Bigger Picture

The trail event is just one piece of a larger puzzle for the **MLK Day of Service**, which includes an impressive *20 volunteer opportunities* organized by the United Way of the Piedmont. Last year’s events saw about 500 participants getting involved, and this year promises to be even bigger!

For families and friends, the day kicks off early with a delicious free community breakfast at the Dr. T.K. Gregg Community Center at 7 a.m., generously hosted by the City of Spartanburg and Denny’s Mobile Relief Diner. What better way to start the day than with good food and great company?

Other opportunities on MLK Day include special volunteer activities, such as packing hygiene kits with Total Ministries, or joining in for a trail cleanup at Duncan Park with Spartanburg PAL. There’s something for everyone, so grab your friends, family, or neighbors and dive into the chance to make a real difference in our community!

Why It Matters

This initiative shines a light on the spirit of community service in honor of Dr. King’s legacy, reminding us all that we can work together to build a brighter and greener future. Together, let’s embrace this chance to give back and enjoy the beauty of our surroundings while creating memories to cherish.

So, Spartanburg—let’s do this! See you on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, ready to build a better community, one trail at a time!
