Chesnee, South Carolina – Frankie Ray “Rooster” Scruggs, aged 78, passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. His family and community mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Scruggs was born in Chesnee and was known for his deep ties to the local community. He was the husband of the late Naomi Sexton Scruggs and the son of the late Melvin Defoy “Rooster” Scruggs and Mary Willie Henderson Scruggs. Throughout his professional life, Scruggs made significant contributions at All Metals Transportation before retiring.
An active member of Southside Baptist Church in Chesnee, Frankie Ray enjoyed engaging with the church community. He had a passion for spending time with his family, playing billiards, and was a dedicated car enthusiast. His spirit will live on through the many hobbies and interests he shared with those around him.
Scruggs is survived by two sons, Billy Ray Scruggs (Angie) and Ray W. Scruggs, both residing in Chesnee. Additionally, he leaves behind a daughter, Tammy Sue Parker, also from Chesnee, as well as two stepdaughters, Brandi Harvey (Glenn) and DeAnna Sexton from Spartanburg. He is remembered by two sisters, Brenda Nordahl (Randy) of Inman and Margaret Hopper of Rutherfordton, along with a cousin raised like a brother, Sam Henderson (Norma Jean) of Spartanburg.
His legacy continues with nine grandchildren: Ashton Payne (Justin), Brittany Scruggs, Tamara Scruggs, Alyssa Parker, Jorden Ray Parker, Karlie Simpson (Devin), Blaine Parr (Allyson), Dare Pettit (Chris), and Talon Abbott (Stacy). In addition, he leaves nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory. Frankie Ray was preceded in death by a grandson, Nicholas Martin.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 11, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Southside Baptist Church in Chesnee. Memorial services will follow immediately at 12:00 PM, officiated by Reverend Camden Bagwell and Reverend Dale Welch.
The Scruggs family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Southside Baptist Church, located at 609 S. Alabama Street, Chesnee, SC 29323. Friends and family may gather at the home of Billy Ray and Angie Scruggs, located at 166 Buckwood Acres, Chesnee, SC 29323.
