Spartanburg, South Carolina – Four new cases of measles have been reported in South Carolina, increasing the total number of cases for 2025 to 23. The outbreak is primarily linked to two schools in Spartanburg County and a gym located in Greenville County, with 20 of the 23 cases connected to this outbreak.
Among the four newly reported cases, two individuals were identified while already undergoing quarantine due to previous exposure to known cases. The other two cases are associated with a business in Spartanburg, but no public exposure has been reported as a result of these new cases. Health officials have stated that all new cases were placed in quarantine before they became infectious, meaning no further exposure to the public has occurred.
A previously identified case involving a child at a gym in Greenville County has now been included in the current outbreak tally due to what officials are calling “unrecognized community transmission.” This child was exposed to measles on September 30 at Crunch Fitness between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. It is advised that individuals who were at Crunch Fitness during that time consult their healthcare providers if they believe they may have been exposed to the virus.
In relation to the schools affected, the exclusionary period for Global Academy in Spartanburg County has concluded, allowing exposed students to resume attendance. Meanwhile, the quarantine period for students at Fairforest Elementary is expected to end on Wednesday, October 22.
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) announced that there have been no additional public exposures linked to the newly reported cases. To combat the outbreak, DPH will be offering measles vaccinations through a mobile unit stationed in Spartanburg County. Vaccination times and locations are as follows:
- Wednesday, October 22: 2-6 p.m. at Wellford Baptist Church, 235 Syphrit Rd., Wellford, S.C.
- Thursday, October 23: 2-6 p.m. at Dr. T. K. Gregg Community Center, 650 Howard St., Spartanburg, S.C.
Symptoms of measles generally include fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash that can last up to six days. Severe complications from the disease can lead to pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death. Health officials recommend the MMR and MMRV vaccines as the most effective means of protection against measles.
The DPH has committed to providing updates on measles cases twice a week, releasing information at noon on Tuesdays and Fridays.
This increasing trend in measles cases stresses the importance of vaccinations and caution in public health measures to prevent further spread of the virus, especially in schools and community settings. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families.
