Rob Gronkowski, the tight end who redefined his position across nine seasons in New England, has been voted into the Patriots Hall of Fame as the franchise’s 38th inductee. The announcement came April 29, capping a fan-vote process in which Gronkowski topped two other finalists — kicker Adam Vinatieri and guard Logan Mankins — to earn enshrinement on his first ballot.
Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft said Gronkowski had redefined what it meant to play tight end and had earned the respect of coaches and teammates through his preparation, work ethic and unselfish approach. Kraft also noted that Gronkowski’s infectious energy set him apart beyond statistics and said the franchise looks forward to celebrating the induction once the 2026 schedule is finalized.
The career numbers are exceptional. Gronkowski caught 521 passes for 7,861 yards and 79 receiving touchdowns in the regular season, ranking first in franchise history in total touchdowns and second in receiving yards. His postseason record is even more dominant: 81 catches for 1,163 yards and 12 scores, ranking fourth all-time in playoff receiving yardage across all positions. In 2011 he set an NFL single-season record with 17 touchdown receptions by a tight end. That same year he finished with 1,327 receiving yards at the position. He became the first tight end in league history to post three seasons with at least 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns — in 2011, 2014 and 2015 — and the first to record three straight 10-touchdown seasons from 2010 through 2012. He earned five Pro Bowl selections and four First-Team All-Pro honors during his time in New England.
Gronkowski was part of three Super Bowl championship rosters with the Patriots before retiring after the 2018 season, then returned to win a fourth ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following the 2020 season. He finished his career ranked sixth among all tight ends in receiving yards and third in touchdown receptions.
The Patriots run the only fan-driven Hall of Fame selection process in the NFL. A 20-person nomination committee drawn from media, alumni and staff identifies three finalists each year; fans then vote online to choose the inductee. Gronkowski is the fourth consecutive three-time Super Bowl champion inducted: Mike Vrabel in 2023, Tom Brady in 2024 and Julian Edelman in 2025.
For Upstate South Carolina football followers, the Patriots announcement connects to a local chapter of NFL history. Wofford College in Spartanburg served as the Carolina Panthers’ summer training camp home for 29 consecutive seasons, from the franchise’s inaugural 1995 camp through 2023. The arrangement stemmed from Panthers founder Jerry Richardson, a Wofford alumnus who played wide receiver for the Terriers before two NFL seasons, and his deep ties to the institution. During those three decades, Spartanburg became one of the few places in the Southeast where NFL players and coaches were accessible to fans up close each summer. The Panthers shifted training operations to Charlotte in 2024, ending the run. Gronkowski’s first-ballot entry into New England’s franchise hall is the kind of recognition that underscores how deeply professional football runs through the communities — including Spartanburg — that hosted league teams and built their fan bases year after year.
