Spartanburg, South Carolina – Spartanburg County Council has taken a significant step towards economic growth by advancing two major automotive expansion projects that are expected to create approximately 97 jobs and bring in an estimated $67 million in investment. These developments are pivotal in meeting the rising demands from key automotive clients such as BMW and Honda.
The first project involves ZF Foxconn Chassis Modules, which will invest $58.3 million and create 30 jobs at its facility located at 171 International Park Drive. ZF Foxconn is a joint venture between ZF Friedrichshafen AG and Hon Hai Technology Group. The company aims to enhance its existing production lines and expand its workforce as part of this investment.
To facilitate this expansion, the council approved an ordinance that authorizes a fee-in-lieu-of-tax agreement (FILOT). This arrangement will lower the assessment ratio of ZF’s property to 6 percent for a period of 30 years. As stipulated in the FILOT agreement, ZF Foxconn is required to invest a minimum of $50 million during a designated five-year period. Notably, this agreement does not impose specific job creation requirements.
The second project is led by Auria, which will inject approximately $9 million into its expansion, generating 67 jobs. This company specializes in automotive acoustics, textiles, and thermal management systems and operates from two locations, 1 Austrian Way and 500 Herald Journal Boulevard in Spartanburg.
Similar to ZF Foxconn, Auria also received a FILOT approval which decreases its property assessment ratio to 6 percent for 30 years. Under this agreement, Auria is required to invest just over $7.1 million over the same five-year timeline, without specific mandates on job creation.
These expansions come in response to the growing demands from major automotive manufacturers. The region’s automotive industry has become increasingly vital, presenting opportunities for job creation and boosting the local economy. This growth not only benefits the companies involved but also supports the community by providing employment opportunities and fostering economic stability.
Local government representatives have indicated that such expansions align with the county’s ongoing commitment to attract and retain manufacturing investments, further solidifying Spartanburg as a key player in the automotive sector in South Carolina.
Overall, the advancements of ZF Foxconn and Auria mark an important development in Spartanburg County’s economic landscape, promising to bring valuable investments and job opportunities that will benefit the local workforce.
