Forecasted high temperatures are set to reach the upper 90s, with July 26 expected to hit 98 degrees, followed by 97 degrees on July 27, and peaking at 99 degrees on July 28. With heat indexes potentially exceeding 105 degrees, officials are warning that these temperatures may approach record highs for this time of year.

The National Weather Service has advised residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours—generally from midday to late afternoon—to minimize exposure to hazardous conditions. Cooling centers have been established to assist individuals lacking air conditioning, offering a crucial respite from the oppressive heat.

Cooling Centers Available

The following locations are designated as cooling centers across various counties:

Anderson County: The HOPE Mission of the Upstate is partnering with the Anderson County Library located at 300 N. McDuffie St. to provide water bottles and serve as a shelter from July 26 to 28, open daily from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Miracle Ministries has set up a cooling center operating from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on July 25 and 26 at 575 W. Washington St. in Greenville.

Spartanburg County: Spartanburg County Emergency Management is running a cooling shelter at 301 Evins Street, open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 25 and 26.

Additionally, the Tyger River Fire Department locations are welcoming guests all day on July 25 and 26, with the main station located at 355 Locust St. in Lyman, along with others at 1090 Gap Creek Road and 1618 Holly Springs Road.

The South Spartanburg Fire Department will open its headquarters at 1070 Southport Road, as well as two other locations including Croft station at 370 Cedar Springs Road in Spartanburg and Stone Station at 2639 Stone Station Road in Roebuck on the same dates.

Duncan Fire Department will operate a cooling station from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 230 School St. in Duncan. The Drayton Fire Department will offer a 24-hour cooling shelter at 101 Dalmatian Drive, and Hilltop Fire Department will be available on July 25 and 26 at 1283 Asheville Hwy in Spartanburg.

The Spartanburg County Emergency Operations Center will provide snacks, drinks, and a place to cool down from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 701 Saxon Ave., closing at 9 p.m.

To successfully navigate the heat, community members are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak hours, and consistently check on their neighbors, particularly those who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

Long-Term Heat Wave

This heat wave is projected to persist through July 28, with temperatures predicted to reach 100 degrees. The Anderson County Emergency Management warns that peak heat levels could range between 101 and 104 degrees or higher, particularly on July 24 and 25. The extreme weather conditions underlie the importance of these cooling stations as safe havens for community residents.
