Greenville, South Carolina – Road construction season is in full swing in the Upstate region, particularly in Greenville, Anderson, and Spartanburg counties. Numerous significant road projects are either nearing completion or set to begin soon, with costs estimated between $8 million and $121 million.

In addition to the construction projects, economic growth opportunities are on the rise in Anderson County. Six companies have proclaimed substantial investments that will benefit the Upstate in 2025 and beyond. Collectively, these enterprises have committed to a capital investment of $99.5 million, which is expected to generate an annual payroll of $37.1 million and create 511 new jobs.

Among the anticipated job openings in these sectors are positions for industrial engineers, technologists, laborers, supervisors, machinists, and technicians. Highlighted projects include Carolina Structural Systems, which announced on December 15, 2023, that it will establish its first facility in South Carolina in Anderson County with a $4.7 million investment, leading to the creation of 60 new jobs. Job roles at this facility will include production workers, line leaders, truss builders, sawyers, and quality inspectors.

Another significant development is by Vertiv, which announced on September 24, 2024, its decision to expand into Anderson County with a $1 million investment, and plans to create 300 jobs at a newly constructed 215,000-square-foot facility in Pelzer. Michelin has also been active in the area, with investments totaling $58 million to expand its existing facility in Anderson, which is projected to create 51 full-time jobs with an average salary of $31.50 per hour. Since its establishment in Anderson County in 1974, Michelin has invested more than $750 million in the region.

In addition, Halton MEI is set to invest $2.6 million in a new manufacturing facility in Anderson County, with plans to generate 65 jobs in sectors such as marine, energy, and heavy industries. Harbor Freight Tools is also planning to set up a $30 million innovation facility in Anderson County, creating 36 jobs with operations expected to commence in late 2025. Furthermore, HS Buildco is channelling an investment of $5 million into construction projects across Anderson and Greenville Counties to stimulate regional economic development.

Traffic Challenges and Road Improvements

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is exploring innovative solutions that extend beyond merely adding new lanes. Some proposed improvements include upgrading interchanges to facilitate better traffic flow. Additionally, suggestions to alleviate congestion have emerged, such as expanding Highway 296 to four lanes and potentially introducing a high-speed railway connecting Charlotte to Atlanta.
