News Summary

Wofford College has appointed Kevin Giltner as the new head coach for its men’s basketball program. This change comes after the dismissal of former coach Dwight Perry amid NCAA investigation issues. Giltner, who is a former player for the Terriers, brings significant coaching experience from his time at Virginia Tech. His appointment aims to revitalize the program and enhance its reputation in the competitive Southern Conference. Giltner expressed enthusiasm for returning to his alma mater as he prepares for the upcoming season.

Spartanburg, South Carolina – Wofford College has officially announced the hiring of Kevin Giltner as the new head coach for its men’s basketball program, marking a significant shift in leadership following recent turmoil. Giltner, a 2012 graduate of Wofford and former player for the Terriers from 2008 to 2012, returns to the college after serving as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech for the last six seasons under head coach Mike Young.

This hiring comes on the heels of Wofford severing ties with former coach Dwight Perry and associate head coach Tysor Anderson, who were both fired on September 12 amid an investigation into alleged minor NCAA violations. These violations involved improper benefits granted to players living off-campus while utilizing the school’s meal plan. Wofford self-reported these violations, and all players impacted have since been reinstated, indicating they will not transfer if Giltner takes the helm.

Giltner brings noteworthy experience to Wofford’s program. As a player, he participated in two NCAA Tournament teams, and as a coach at Virginia Tech, he contributed to an impressive record, including reaching the NCAA Tournament and winning the ACC championship. During his tenure, the Hokies secured winning seasons in four out of six years, and Giltner played a key role in establishing school records for three-pointers made in a game.

The Wofford men’s basketball program is facing a challenging environment, particularly due to its size of under 2,000 undergraduates and the competitive nature of the Southern Conference. The recent changes follow a successful season in 2025 when Wofford reached the NCAA Tournament. Prior to Perry’s appointment, Giltner’s predecessor Jay McAuley was dismissed for several NCAA violations related to practice limits.

As he returns to Wofford, Giltner expressed enthusiasm for rejoining the program he considers home. His experience as a player and coach, combined with his academic background in business economics from Wofford, positions him well to lead the team into the upcoming season. Giltner’s first game as head coach will occur on November 3, 2025, against George Mason.

Wofford College’s athletic director, Scott Kull, highlighted Giltner’s deep connections to the program and expressed excitement about bringing him back to lead the student-athletes. With Giltner at the helm, the college aims to provide a positive experience for both current and future players, working towards restoring the team’s reputation and success in collegiate basketball.
