Spartanburg Hosts Safe Kids Day to Promote Bicycle Safety

Spartanburg is gearing up for Safe Kids Day on June 6, focusing on bicycle safety as summer approaches. The event will take place from 4 PM to 7 PM at Cleveland Park and aims to educate children and families about the importance of safety while enjoying outdoor activities, particularly biking.

Penny Shaw, director of Safe Kids of the Piedmont, points out that the summer season can be particularly perilous for children, often referred to as the “100 deadliest days” for unintentional injuries. Data from Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System reveals that 41% of all deaths related to unintentional injuries occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This highlights the critical need for safety measures, especially regarding biking.

In years past, wearing bike helmets was not a common practice among children. However, rising awareness about head injuries has made helmet usage a priority for safety. Shaw emphasizes that wearing helmets can prevent serious brain injuries for both children and adults while biking.

Event Highlights

The Safe Kids Day event will feature a miniature model town, providing children with a hands-on opportunity to learn and practice traffic rules for walking and biking. In addition to educational activities, various vendors dedicated to family and child wellness will participate, including Spartanburg County Parks and Recreation and the City of Spartanburg Fire Department. As part of their commitment to safety, Safe Kids plans to distribute 100 bike helmets to attendees to encourage safe riding practices.

Associated Cycling Events

Coinciding with Safe Kids Day is the Spartanburg Criterium, part of the Speed Week series, which attracts around 600 cyclists from various locations. The Criterium course is designed to provide an intimate atmosphere for both racers and spectators, featuring unique sections such as cobblestone paths. The event will include both amateur and professional races, with 125 cyclists expected to compete in men’s and women’s categories.

The safety of participants and spectators during the Criterium will be closely monitored. Officials, including a pace car and motorcycle referees, will oversee the races, ensuring that cyclists are safe during competitions. In the event of a crash, measures are in place to halt the race if necessary to tend to injuries. While racing will continue in light rain, thunderstorms could potentially disrupt the event.

Importance of Cycling Safety

Cycling is recognized as a strategic sport where the dynamics of team play and various rider capabilities significantly influence race outcomes. The upcoming races during the Spartanburg Criterium are expected to showcase high speeds, particularly among professional competitors. Coupled with Safe Kids Day, these events serve to blend the thrill of cycling with vital safety education, ensuring a safer summer for the community.

Safe Kids Day’s emphasis on bicycle safety reflects a broader understanding of the risks associated with outdoor activities during the summer months. By intertwining safety education with opportunities for outdoor fun, both families and children are encouraged to enjoy their summer with a stronger emphasis on safe practices.
