Spartanburg, SC – A Spartanburg family is seeking justice after 35 years of unanswered questions surrounding the murder of cab driver Kenneth “Toby” Wynn, who was found shot to death in his vehicle on December 28, 1991. The case remains unsolved and continues to haunt his family as they push for closure.
The second episode of the series Unsolved Upstate recently highlighted the unresolved murder. Kenneth Wynn, 43 years old at the time of his death, was working a night shift for Yellow Cab Deluxe on that fateful evening. Dispatch had received a call at 7:27 p.m. requesting Wynn’s cab number prior to the pick-up, which was to take place on the north side of Spartanburg, near Vernon Street.
Shortly after the request, a 911 call reporting a taxi crash on Ansel Street was made at 7:40 p.m., just 13 minutes later. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Wynn deceased from a gunshot wound inside his cab, which had stopped after crashing into a tree. Remarkably, both the driver’s side and rear passenger doors were open, suggesting a struggle or altercation had occurred.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that a person was seen leaning into the cab before fleeing towards Church Street. The 911 call reporting the taxi crash came from a residence on South Church Street, not far from where Wynn’s body was discovered. At the time of his death, Wynn was known for meticulously organizing his cash fares: smaller bills were kept in his shirt pocket while larger bills were stored in his pants. A bag, typically carried by Wynn, was missing from the cab, hinting that robbery could have been a motive behind his murder.
Over the years, investigators have explored multiple leads. Several individuals connected to the case underwent polygraph tests, and although some showed indications of deception, the connection among these individuals remains unclear. They may have varying motivations behind their misleading responses. The investigation was later transferred to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) for further DNA and fingerprint analysis. Evidence collected included cigarette butts, fingerprints, and a potential weapon; however, none decisively links any suspect to the crime.
Ernest Wynn, Kenneth’s younger brother, has continued to advocate for justice. He described Toby as kind and humble, expressing his keen involvement in family and automotive work. The loss of Kenneth still resonates deeply within the family, and Ernest emphasized the ongoing need for closure. Unfortunately, despite extensive investigations and numerous interviews with potential witnesses, no charges have been filed in Kenneth Wynn’s case, which remains open.
Captain Mark Hillers from the Spartanburg Police underscored the necessity of collecting accurate evidence to prevent wrongful accusations. Authorities continue to believe that crucial information pertaining to the case still exists and could potentially lead to a resolution. Consequently, citizens with any knowledge regarding the murder are encouraged to reach out to the Spartanburg Police Department or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.
The murder of Kenneth “Toby” Wynn serves as a painful reminder of the unresolved violence that can occur in communities, and as the years pass, the pursuit of justice for this case remains steadfast among his family and local law enforcement.
