US-Iran Peace Talks Underway in Pakistan — What It Means for Spartanburg Military Families, Gas Prices, and the Upstate Economy

US-Iran Peace Talks Underway in Pakistan — What It Means for Spartanburg Military Families, Gas Prices, and the Upstate Economy

Historic face-to-face peace negotiations between the United States and Iran are underway in Islamabad, Pakistan today — the first direct talks between the two nations since the 1979 Islamic Revolution — as the six-week conflict enters a critical diplomatic phase with significant implications for South Carolina military families, energy costs, and the Upstate manufacturing economy.

What’s Happening in Islamabad

Vice President JD Vance is leading the American delegation alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Iran’s team is headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Pakistan is hosting and mediating the discussions, which follow a two-week ceasefire declared on Tuesday.

The talks are focused on solidifying the ceasefire and addressing the Strait of Hormuz blockade, which has disrupted roughly 20 percent of global oil supplies since Iran effectively closed the waterway to most commercial shipping when the war began on February 28.

Iran has released a 10-point proposal calling for the right to retain control of the Strait of Hormuz, the release of frozen Iranian assets, the ability to pursue uranium enrichment for peaceful purposes, and an end to Israeli attacks on Lebanon. President Trump, meanwhile, announced Saturday that the U.S. has begun “clearing out” the Strait of Hormuz.

What This Means for South Carolina Families

Military Families Across the State

South Carolina is home to several major military installations directly connected to Operation Epic Fury. Fort Jackson in Columbia is one of the Army’s largest training installations. Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter is headquarters for the 20th Fighter Wing and the U.S. Air Forces Central command element. Joint Base Charleston serves as a critical logistics and airlift hub — airmen there were conducting deployment readiness exercises as recently as January.

The SC National Guard’s 169th Fighter Wing at McEntire Joint National Guard Base has previously deployed to the CENTCOM area of responsibility. Thousands of paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne at nearby Fort Liberty (formerly Bragg) in North Carolina — where many military families have ties to the Upstate — have already deployed to the Middle East.

At least 13 U.S. service members have been killed and more than 300 wounded since the conflict began. The Army recently expanded reenlistment eligibility, allowing soldiers deployed in Operation Epic Fury to reenlist up to two years early — a sign of the sustained demand on military personnel.

Gas Prices Hitting Spartanburg Wallets

South Carolinians are paying the price at the pump. The state average for regular gas hit $3.87 per gallon as of April 10 — up 35 percent from a year ago when the average was $2.82. Diesel, which directly affects shipping and freight costs for everything from groceries to building materials, has surged to $5.69 per gallon — a 63 percent year-over-year increase and a new all-time state record.

Nationally, gas prices crossed $4 per gallon for the first time since August 2022. Economists warn that if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, crude oil prices could climb to $150 per barrel or higher, which would push pump prices even further upward.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas estimates the Hormuz closure could lower global GDP growth by nearly 3 percentage points in the second quarter of 2026 alone.

BMW and the Upstate Manufacturing Economy

The talks carry direct economic weight for the Spartanburg area. BMW Manufacturing in Greer — the largest automotive exporter by value in the United States for nine consecutive years — generates an annual economic impact of $26.7 billion for South Carolina and supports nearly 43,000 jobs statewide.

The plant depends on a global supply chain that runs through international shipping lanes, including routes affected by the Strait of Hormuz disruption. Rising energy and shipping costs, combined with broader economic uncertainty from the conflict, put pressure on manufacturing operations, supplier networks, and the thousands of Upstate workers whose livelihoods are tied to the automotive corridor along I-85.

BMW is joined by other major Spartanburg-area manufacturers including Michelin, Milliken, and Denny’s corporate headquarters — all of which face elevated input costs as long as global energy markets remain disrupted.

What to Watch

Veteran diplomats have expressed skepticism that a comprehensive deal can be reached without at least extending the two-week ceasefire window. Key sticking points include the future of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program, frozen Iranian assets, and the ongoing Israeli campaign in Lebanon.

If the talks produce a framework for reopening the Strait, energy markets could stabilize quickly — the Dallas Fed projects oil dropping to $68 per barrel within one quarter of the waterway reopening. If they stall, economists warn of sustained $4-plus gas prices through the summer and mounting pressure on manufacturing supply chains.

HERESpartanburg will continue to monitor these negotiations and report on their impact for Spartanburg County residents, military families, and the Upstate economy.
