A Tragic Split-Second Decision

A man from Spartanburg County lost his life over the weekend when sheriff’s deputies opened fire on him after he tried to escape following a car crash on Interstate 85. The man, identified as 25-year-old Nicholas Daniel Austin Papala, reportedly crashed his car at 2:52 a.m. Sunday on the northbound lane of the interstate.

Upon investigation, Highway Patrol spokesperson confirmed that the incident was a single-car wreck reported at mile marker 71 on I-85, resulting in one lane being blocked. At that time, no individuals were identified at the scene with the vehicle.

Fleeing the Crash Site

After the car crash, the driver, later identified as Papala, allegedly fled into the woods. Fire department personnel responding to the crash located Papala in the woods using thermal imaging. Also present was a state trooper. Upon questioning, Papala inquired if they were law enforcement, to which they replied in the negative. At this point, Papala revealed that he had a gun and asked them to notify him when law enforcement arrived, as stated by the Sheriff’s Office.

The Highway Patrol contacted the Sheriff’s Office around 3:40 a.m for reinforcements. Fire department personnel backed off from the woods as four sheriff’s deputies advanced towards the suspect located across the fence in the woods.

Deadly Encounter

In a tense series of events, the suspect allegedly refused to obey multiple verbal commands from law enforcement officers’ present at the scene. According to the official statement, the suspect was seen lifting his shirt and reaching for an object in his waistband, prompting all four deputies on the spot to open fire, resulting in the death of the suspect.

The authorities confirmed that no officers were injured in the incident. All the deputies involved in the shooting were subsequently placed on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.
