Spring Fling Nears: Saluting 19-Year Volunteer Gail Moss Carson

In Spartanburg, an annual spectacle that brings joy, fun, and vibrancy to the city streets is once again on the horizon. The much-loved Spring Fling, a yearly street festival set to take place between April 26-28, 2024, is expected to draw the attention of over 100,000 visitors. Behind the scenes, a host of volunteers contribute to the seamless execution of the event. Among their ranks is a woman whose work has proven invaluable for the past 19 years – Gail Moss Carson.

A Commitment to Community

Moss, a Spartanburg native, finds profound joy and satisfaction in lending a helping hand to her community. Her association with the festival began in 2005, when she was recommended by a friend as a potential volunteer. The festival organizers at the time were on the lookout for someone with the right connections to secure setup equipment and musicians for the event. Moss, who had a background in radio hosting and had interacted with various artists, was the perfect fit.

Moss: The Backbone of Spring Fling

“I had met a lot of artists, so I knew how to get the acts. It makes you feel good when you can be out there, seeing the faces of the people enjoying the event. They needed someone, so I just stepped in,” Moss stated. At 68, she continues to be an integral part of the team that ensures the flawless staging of the event. As a member of the city’s events and festival committee, Moss proves an indispensable asset not only at Spring Fling but also at other special events in Spartanburg such as the Juneteenth and the International Festival.

Appreciating Moss’s Dedication

Aundreana Hunter, special events manager for the city, expresses high regard for Moss and her ceaseless commitment. “I would like to give a huge thank you to Gail for her continuous commitment to Spring Fling and all of our special events. Gail is such a gem that we are so thankful for,” Hunter affirmed.

Moss’s work primarily involves coordinating the setup and live music act at the Morgan Square Stage – a role that perfectly fits her love for sharing and connecting with individuals.

What to Expect at Spring Fling 2024?

Visitors to this year’s edition of Spring Fling can anticipate an array of family entertainment, including family fun zones, vendor marketplace, non-profit stands, a food court, and the signature bike race. Additionally, a new category added to the Spring Fling line-up is the Jeep Show slated for Sunday. Jeep owners will get a chance to showcase their vehicles and compete for prestigious awards. According to Hunter, “It’s a competition all right. Carolina Classic is the one who puts it on, but there’s a voting and a big award show after.”

As Spartanburg’s residents prepare to ring in Spring 2024 with the much-awaited Spring Fling festival, volunteers like Gail Moss Carson continue to work steadfastly behind the scenes, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
