SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A former cryptocurrency mining facility in the Tyger River Industrial Park in Spartanburg County is being converted into a data center, with the company aiming to have it operational by the end of 2027.
The company, now called AIB Data Centers, said the new site will have an electrical load of only 50 megawatts. It will buy power from a utility instead of producing it, and it will sit on the same land footprint as the bitcoin mining facility that started up in 2022.
That keeps the project under Spartanburg County’s data center moratorium. County Council voted 5-1 in September to approve a one-year freeze on new data centers that applies only to facilities larger than 65 megawatts.
Smaller data centers can still build if they are inside an established industrial park or on a former industrial site and do not generate their own electricity except for emergency backup power.
The company estimates the data center will use about 165 gallons of water a day, and it offered to give up incentives awarded to the crypto mining facility in 2022. AIB has signed a 12-year agreement with Dutch AI company Nebius.
