A gas leak closed the 3800 block of East Main Street in Spartanburg on Monday afternoon after a construction worker accidentally punctured a fuel line while working in the area, the Spartanburg Police Department said.
The Spartanburg Fire Department responded to the scene at approximately 2:45 p.m. on April 27, according to a post from Spartanburg PD. Crews worked to stop the leak and make repairs as emergency personnel cordoned off the affected stretch of road.
Road closed as crews worked to repair the line
East Main Street between Webber Road and the surrounding blocks was closed to traffic while fire and utility crews worked on the damaged line. The Spartanburg Police Department asked drivers to find alternate routes, and multiple news outlets reported that crews remained on scene into the evening without an estimated repair time.
Local news crews reported that some lanes reopened after repairs progressed, and the road returned to normal traffic flow after the crew finished work Monday night.
No injuries reported
Neither the Spartanburg Police Department nor the fire department reported any injuries related to the gas leak. The cause — an accidental puncture by a construction crew — did not involve a utility company break or corroded pipe, according to the police statement posted to social media.
Gas leaks caused by construction activity are among the more common infrastructure incidents in growing urban corridors. The 3800 block of East Main Street is a commercial area east of downtown Spartanburg that has seen increased construction activity in recent years tied to road widening and commercial development projects.
