The Commissioners of Public Works of the City of Spartanburg issued a drought proclamation for the Landrum service area effective April 29 at 4 p.m., citing significantly reduced stream flows supplying the Landrum Water Treatment Facility due to abnormally dry weather and moderate drought conditions.
The proclamation asks Landrum customers to take voluntary steps to reduce water use. Specific guidance includes inspecting and repairing leaking toilets, faucets, and pipes; taking short showers rather than baths; turning off water while shaving or brushing teeth; and running dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
For outdoor water use, the proclamation recommends limiting irrigation to the overnight hours between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to reduce evaporation. Customers whose addresses end in even numbers or letters A through M are asked to water only on Thursdays and Sundays. Those with addresses ending in odd numbers or letters N through Z are asked to water only on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Additional guidance asks residents to refrain from washing down driveways, gutters and sidewalks; reduce vehicle and boat washing; avoid using water to maintain decorative fountains unless necessary to sustain aquatic life; and limit golf course and grounds irrigation. Food service establishments are asked to serve water to customers only upon request.
The restrictions come amid a prolonged drought affecting the broader Upstate South Carolina region. The Greenville-Spartanburg area had accumulated a rainfall deficit of more than six inches below normal since December 1, 2025, through late February, with the deficit continuing to grow through April as extreme drought conditions expanded across portions of Spartanburg County and much of the Upstate region.
The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport recorded only 0.46 inches of rain during a late April rainfall event — the most precipitation at that station since an April 5 soaker — but forecasters noted the totals were insufficient to meaningfully address accumulated deficits.
Spartanburg Water said it will continue monitoring water use in the Landrum service area and will share updated drought information with customers as conditions develop. Landrum customers with questions may reach the utility’s Customer Experience team at (877) 797-7773, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
