Golf Industry Weighs PGA Tour's 2028 Restructuring

The golf industry is actively assessing the PGA Tour’s significant changes slated for 2028, which many consider the most substantial in the tour’s history. A recent industry poll, conducted in the weeks leading up to August 21, 2026, gathered responses from 43 stakeholders regarding the new Championship and Challenger Series model.

Of those surveyed, more than half, specifically 26 respondents, indicated they would buy into the tour’s changes. Fourteen stakeholders chose to hold, seeking more information, while three expressed a complete sell on the plan. The respondents included 12 player agents/managers, nine tournament directors or operators, eight media representatives, eight other agency representatives, and six varied industry stakeholders.

The new structure introduces a Championship Series of 15 events, excluding post-season, majors, the Players Championship, or Ryder/Presidents cups, featuring the top 120 players. These events are designed for the tour’s premier golf courses and markets. Despite sponsorship costs reaching $30 million annually, the PGA Tour has successfully secured sponsors for seven of these 15 events, including new markets and title sponsors. For example, Japan-based insurer Sompo will sponsor a new event in 2027 that transitions to Championship-level in 2028, and Raymond James will sponsor Greensboro’s annual tour stop.

Industry executives largely applaud the Championship Series’ return to cuts in tournaments, a feature absent in the current Signature event model. This change is expected to lead to more frequent head-to-head competition among top players, making it easier for fans to follow the sport’s heavyweights. However, a potential concern is that top players will not be mandated to compete in all Championship Series events, similar to how some have skipped Signature events in the past.

The Challenger Series, comprising 20 events with 144-man fields, has generated the most questions among respondents. These events are not expected to feature top Championship players, raising concerns about viewer interest and sponsor willingness to invest. The Challenger Series will have two tiers: seven events with their own week, broadcast on network TV, and 13 events played opposite Championship events, broadcast only on cable. Sponsorships for network TV Challenger events are estimated at $10 million annually, while cable/opposite events are in the $5 million range, with possibilities for multiple sponsors.

PGA Tour Chief Commercial Officer Dhruv Prasad stated last month that the Challenger Series offers competitive consequence and storytelling opportunities, allowing players to qualify for the Championship level weekly. This system aims to highlight individual journeys and competitive parity within the sport.
