SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Sterling Anderson, a Spartanburg native who spent more than a decade in the state House and later represented District 1 on Spartanburg City Council, has died at age 84, the city announced.
Anderson held the District 1 council seat from 2013 to 2019. City leaders credited him with treating time spent hearing from his neighbors as the core of the job, and they noted that his years on council lined up with fresh investment in the city, including work at Airport Park and St. Matthews Community Park.
Before city politics, Anderson won a seat in the South Carolina House in 1976 representing House District 34 and stayed until 1987. From 1982 to 1985 he held the Speaker Pro Tempore post for two terms and chaired the House Operations and Management Committee.
A Wofford College graduate, he was awarded the state’s Order of the Palmetto in 1983. He also spent close to 23 years in uniform, 19 of them with the South Carolina National Guard, and retired as a lieutenant colonel.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Second Presbyterian Church on North Church Street, followed by a full military burial at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
