The Regiment: USC Upstate Launches Spartanburg NIL Collective for Division I Athletes

Spartanburg Has Its Own NIL Collective

USC Upstate launched The Regiment in August 2024 as the official NIL collective for Spartans student-athletes. Powered by Student Athlete NIL, which operates collectives for more than 45 universities across the country, The Regiment creates a direct connection between Spartanburg-area businesses and Division I athletes at USC Upstate.

The Regiment allows local businesses to invest in student-athlete partnerships through endorsements, appearances, social media campaigns, and brand ambassadorships. For USC Upstate athletes, The Regiment provides a structured and compliant pathway to earn NIL income while competing in the Big South Conference.

How The Regiment Works

Student Athlete NIL operates as a marketing, media, and technology agency supporting student-athlete NIL opportunities. The organization handles deal structure, compliance oversight, content production, and payment processing. Businesses that partner through The Regiment receive access to USC Upstate athletes for marketing campaigns, while athletes receive professional representation and deal management.

The collective model differs from a direct business-to-athlete deal in that it provides institutional support and compliance infrastructure. Athletes do not need to negotiate terms on their own, and businesses benefit from a standardized engagement process that reduces legal risk on both sides.

What This Means for Spartanburg

The Regiment is the only college NIL collective headquartered in Spartanburg. This gives local businesses direct access to Division I athletes without needing to work through collectives in Columbia or Clemson. For Spartanburg restaurants, automotive dealerships, fitness centers, and retailers, The Regiment represents a local marketing channel that connects their brand with athletes who live and train in the same community.

Each year, SANIL celebrates student-athlete achievements at the NIL Summit, held at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. USC Upstate athletes participating in The Regiment gain access to this national platform alongside athletes from other SANIL-managed programs.
