Wofford Baseball Eyes SoCon Tournament After Split Series With Western Carolina

Wofford College baseball finished its home series against Western Carolina with a split result over the May 1-3 weekend at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, winning the opener before dropping the final two games. The Terriers took the series opener Friday, beating the Catamounts 6-1, then fell 3-2 on Saturday and 7-5 on Sunday. The weekend concluded a stretch of mixed results for the program as it prepares to close out regular-season play ahead of the Southern Conference Tournament, set for May 20-23 at Fluor Field in Greenville.

Wofford’s schedule heading into that postseason push includes a road game at Gardner-Webb on May 6, followed by three home matchups against East Tennessee State on May 8, 9, and 10. The final home date on May 10 serves as Senior Day at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers then travel to Samford on May 14-16 for the final road series of the regular season before the SoCon Tournament begins.

The Terriers earlier in the year put together an impressive home run during the April 17-21 stretch. Wofford won at UNC Asheville on April 17 by a score of 16-1 in seven innings, then handled UNC Asheville at Russell C. King Field 11-0 and 20-9 over the following two days. The Terriers capped that run by beating Queens University 20-1 on April 21 in a dominant midweek showing. That stretch gave Wofford consecutive wins and pushed the offense into double-digit run territory four games in a row.

Conference play has defined the Terriers’ standing. Wofford swept a three-game home series against The Citadel from April 10-12, winning by scores of 2-0, 6-5, and 5-3 to take all three games in Spartanburg. The Terriers earlier swept a three-game series against UNC Greensboro from March 27-29, winning 8-7, 6-1, and 6-3 in front of home fans. Those conference series wins have kept Wofford in contention for tournament positioning.

Not every stretch went smoothly. The Terriers dropped three straight at Mercer from April 24-26, losing 9-8 in 11 innings on Friday, 5-1 on Saturday, and 13-8 on Sunday. Gardner-Webb then handed Wofford a 6-0 shutout at Russell C. King Field on April 28, adding to a tough late-April run. The subsequent Western Carolina split continued that inconsistent pattern, though the 6-1 win on May 1 showed the offense can produce at a high level when the rotation clicks.

The Southern Conference Tournament at Fluor Field in Greenville spans May 20-23. For Wofford fans, Senior Day on May 10 at Russell C. King Field — the final home game of the regular season — provides one last chance to see this year’s class in action before postseason play begins. Tickets and game-day information are available through Wofford Athletics.
