Spartanburg, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division charged Joseph Antoniyo Waller, 19, with lottery fraud after investigators said he took South Carolina Education Lottery scratch-off tickets without paying while working at a Circle K in Duncan.
SLED said Waller was charged Thursday with intent to defraud, counterfeit game tickets. The South Carolina Education Lottery requested the SLED investigation. He was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center, and the case will be prosecuted by the 7th Circuit Solicitor Office.
An arrest warrant states that on Sept. 29 Waller unlawfully obtained and tried to pass off scratch-off tickets at the Circle K store on E. Main Street in Duncan. Surveillance footage showed Waller obtaining the tickets without paying while he was working at the store, and store management identified him to officials.
Waller is from Spartanburg. Court records also list a breach of trust with fraudulent intent charge, and he is scheduled to return to court in November and December on the pending counts.
SLED released the charge Monday. Investigators have not publicly detailed how many tickets were involved or how much prize money was redeemed from the stolen games.
