SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A Spartanburg homeowner pulled down her Halloween yard display after a man confronted her over it and an online post about the decorations was followed by death threats, according to a Spartanburg Police Department report.
Officers were sent to a home on South Fairview Avenue at about 4:50 p.m. Wednesday for a harassment call. The display featured body-like shapes made of black trash bags and duct tape, suspended feet up.
The woman told police a man came to her door, insulted her over the figures and then used a megaphone from his car while demanding she remove them. She said she was recovering from leg surgery and wanted to wait for help, but she ended up climbing a ladder and taking the props down by herself.
She told officers she has used the same decorations in earlier years and that hundreds of trick-or-treaters have stopped by. A coworker later told her the man had posted about the display online, and the threats followed, the report says. She does not plan to put the figures back up.
No arrest was listed in the report. Hanging body-bag props have prompted police complaints in other communities as well, including a case in Bowie, Maryland, where neighbors objected to a fake corpse in a garbage bag dangling head-down from a tree.
