SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A 74-year-old man from Mars Hill, North Carolina, died Sunday after a three-vehicle wreck where the I-85 exit ramp meets Gossett Road in Spartanburg County, the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said.
The coroner identified him as David McElroy. The crash was reported at 8:02 a.m. McElroy was taken to Spartanburg Regional, where he died at 8:56 that morning.
Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said McElroy, at the wheel of a 2024 Ford Maverick, was coming off the northbound I-85 exit ramp. As the pickup turned south onto Gossett Road, it went across the median, into traffic heading north, and hit a 2020 Toyota RAV4 plus a 2023 Ford F-250 that was towing a closed trailer.
A passenger in the Maverick and the lone person in the RAV4 were also brought to the hospital by EMS crews. Troopers said the driver of the F-250 was not hurt.
The coroner’s office has scheduled a forensic exam for Monday. The Highway Patrol is still investigating what caused the crash.
