SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Close to 70 people went over the side of the 16-story Denny’s corporate headquarters in downtown Spartanburg on Friday, and their descents pushed the final Over the Edge Upstate fundraiser past its $100,000 target before the day was half over.
The rappel down the tower at 203 E. Main St. covers 192 feet. Every participant had to bring in at least $1,000 to earn a turn on the ropes, and trained crews stayed with each one on the way down.
All of the money goes to the Cancer Association of Spartanburg & Cherokee Counties, which helps about 1,200 patients a year pay for food, supplies and rides to medical care. Organizers have said this year is the last for the event, which had raised $709,690 since it began in 2018.
The association does not charge for its help and does not consider income or insurance. Patients who live in either county and have a current cancer diagnosis can qualify with approval from their oncology team, and services range from wigs and nutrition supplements to wheelchairs, walkers and counseling. The association can be reached at 864-582-0771.
