SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A 95-year-old passenger from Laurens died Saturday of injuries from a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 221 near Interstate 26 that happened Oct. 5, the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Spartanburg County Coroner Office said.

Troopers said the crash happened about 1 p.m. Monday when a Ford Explorer traveling south on U.S. 221 tried to turn left onto the Interstate 26 east entrance ramp and was struck on the front right side by a northbound 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt.

The passenger and the Explorer driver were taken to the hospital by EMS, as was the Cobalt driver, who was the only person in that car, troopers said.

The coroner office said the passenger was pronounced dead at 1:16 p.m. Saturday at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A forensic exam was scheduled for Monday.

The wreck remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol. Officials have not released further details on injuries to the two drivers.
