District 2 Voters Decide $186 Million in School Bonds Today

BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. — Voters in Spartanburg School District 2 settle two school building questions at the polls today, with a new K-8 school for the Boiling Springs area at the center of the package.

The first question asks whether the district Board of Trustees may borrow through general obligation bonds of not more than $156,600,000. That money would pay to build and equip the Boiling Springs K-8 and to add classrooms at both Mayo Elementary and Cooley Springs-Fingerville Elementary, including design, engineering and legal costs. District officials say this question carries no property tax increase.

A second question seeks up to $30 million for work at all 14 district schools, with the money going to stadiums at the high schools, sports spaces at the middle schools and new playground equipment at the elementary level. That part would add five mills, which the district estimates at roughly $20 a year for the owner of a $100,000 home, or near $30 a year for commercial and rental property at that value. Question 2 cannot pass unless Question 1 passes too.

Growth is the main reason behind the request. Enrollment has climbed past 12,200 this year, up from a little more than 10,500 in 2019, and Boiling Springs and Chesnee high schools would both see athletic improvements if the second question is approved. Polls close at 7 p.m.
