SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The first day of in-person early voting for the Nov. 3 midterm brought 3,954 Spartanburg County residents to the polls by roughly 3:50 p.m. Monday.

County elections director John Baucom described a steady flow of voters, with most people waiting five minutes or less. He said that first-day pace puts the county on track for more than 60,000 early ballots, in line with what his office projected.

Baucom also expects close to 60% of registered voters to take part this fall, above the roughly 50% a midterm usually draws.

Neighboring Greenville County counted 5,904 voters by 2:30 p.m., while Anderson County had 2,056 by 3:40 p.m.

In-person early voting runs Monday through Saturday until Oct. 31, starting at 8:30 a.m. each day, with no voting on Sundays. Voters must show an accepted photo ID, and anyone voting absentee needs an approved excuse, with applications due Oct. 23.

The ballot carries races for U.S. Senate, governor, attorney general and commissioner of agriculture. Closer to home, two retirements and two primary defeats mean four of the seven seats on Spartanburg County Council will be filled by newcomers, as the panel deals with public pushback over its pursuit of data centers.

Sample ballots and polling locations are posted at SCVotes.gov. The county elections office is still recruiting poll workers for Election Day.
