SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Winthrop scored with under seven minutes left to beat USC Upstate 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C., ending the home team’s men’s soccer regular season at County University Soccer Stadium.
Winthrop went ahead in the eighth minute when Juma Baden scored from the penalty spot. Upstate pushed for most of the first half, taking 11 shots to the visitors’ eight, and Oscar Kelly hit the left post in the 12th minute.
The Spartans pulled even in the 65th minute when Christian Cook buried a penalty kick, his fourth goal of the year. Teo Jelaca answered for Winthrop at 83:11 with his fifth of the season, and Upstate could not find another equalizer.
Upstate outshot Winthrop 16-14, but Winthrop put six shots on target to Upstate’s two and earned seven corners to three. Goalkeeper Jarrett Wuerslin went the full 90 minutes and made four saves. Kelly and Jayden Montgomery each took three shots.
Upstate finishes the regular season 5-12-0 overall and 3-4-0 in Big South play. Winthrop moves to 6-8-3 and 3-3-1 in the league.
The result snapped a brief run of good form for the Spartans, who had won 2-1 at UNC Asheville on Oct. 24 in the I-26 rivalry game. Their only Big South win at home this fall came against Radford, also by a 2-1 score, on Oct. 3.
