SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A 15-year-old and a 17-year-old from the city died early Sunday after someone opened fire in the parking lot of a Cook Out restaurant on John B. White Sr. Boulevard late on Halloween night, and the Spartanburg Police Department says it has not identified a suspect.
Officers were sent to the restaurant at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday after reports of several shots. They found two people with gunshot wounds in the lot, gave them first aid and sent them to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The Spartanburg County Coroner identified the victims as Jayden Marek Watson, 15, who died at 12:04 a.m., and Shane Carter Dawkins, 17, who died at 12:10 a.m. Both lived in Spartanburg. The coroner was called to the hospital rather than the scene, and autopsies are planned to help investigators.
A third person was hit by gunfire and was driven to the hospital by a relative. That injury was not considered life threatening.
Chief Littlejohn said the victims were simply kids who had been out trick-or-treating and stopped for food before someone pulled a gun. No arrests have been made, and the coroner called the case a very active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Spartanburg Police Department.
