SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The USC Upstate men’s soccer team from Spartanburg, S.C., is two wins from an NCAA Tournament bid, and the next step comes Sunday night in a Big South semifinal at Gardner-Webb.
Kickoff in Boiling Springs, N.C., is set for 7:00 p.m. The Spartans are the No. 6 seed and will face No. 2 Gardner-Webb, while No. 5 Longwood visits top seed High Point in the other semifinal at the same hour.
Upstate got here by winning 1-0 at third-seeded UNC Asheville on Wednesday. David Palade scored the only goal, his third game-winner of the season, and it was the second time this fall the Spartans beat the Bulldogs.
The numbers say Upstate is the underdog. The Spartans carry a 6-12-0 record and went 3-4-0 in league play, while Gardner-Webb is 9-4-2 and finished 5-1-1 in the conference.
Christian Cook leads Upstate with five goals, and Jarrett Wuerslin has been in goal for every one of the 18 matches, making 74 saves. The title game is Saturday, Nov. 14, at the highest remaining seed, and the champion earns the league’s automatic NCAA bid.
