COWPENS, S.C. — Spartanburg County sheriff’s deputies are trying to learn what set a vacant house ablaze in the Cowpens area before dawn Tuesday, and they are treating the fire as suspicious.
The Mayo Fire Department got the emergency call at 4:39 a.m. and sent crews to the 200 block of Cemetery Road, where they found the empty home burning. Fire officials have not said what caused it.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office confirmed its deputies joined the case once the fire was flagged as suspicious. As of Tuesday, nobody had been taken into custody and no one faced charges.
The house was empty when the fire broke out, according to deputies. Investigators had released no other details in early reports, and the probe remains open while they work to pin down a cause.
