SPARTANBURG, S.C. — State agents have charged a Spartanburg man with two forgery counts that each involve $10,000 or more, accusing him of using phony insurance paperwork to rent heavy equipment.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said Cory William Smith, 38, was charged on Monday. SLED opened the investigation at the request of the South Carolina Department of Insurance, which will also prosecute the case.

Warrants say Smith, acting for his own company, handed over a certificate in May claiming general liability coverage to back an equipment rental deal. The insurer named on it said it had never covered the company, and most of the policy numbers traced back to his former employer, according to the warrants.

A day later, the warrants say, he turned in a second altered certificate that reused those policy numbers.

Agents took Smith to the Spartanburg County Detention Center for booking. SLED had already charged him with the same type of forgery on June 29, 2026. A charge is only an accusation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
