SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The busiest road in Spartanburg County that is not an interstate is Business 85, according to 2025 average daily traffic counts kept by the South Carolina Department of Transportation.
The stretch from Interstate 26 to Fairforest Road averaged about 49,300 vehicles a day. A little farther along, between Fairforest Road and New Cut Road, the count was roughly 46,600.
Warren H. Abernathy Highway, the U.S. 29 corridor, came close behind. Its segment from Blackstock Road to Interstate 26 handled around 48,300 vehicles daily.
Business 85 feeds straight onto I-85, so if it is set aside as an interstate spur, Abernathy Highway becomes the county’s top conventional highway. East St. John Street, which is U.S. 176, follows at about 37,000 a day. Third is S.C. 295 close to the John B. White Sr. Boulevard junction, with about 35,900 daily.
The pressure on the interstate itself is also under review. The transportation department is running a 2026 planning study of 35 miles of I-85 from Exit 34 at U.S. 29 to Exit 69 at S.C. 85, covering 18 interchanges and the major roads feeding them. The Spartanburg Area Transportation Study is one of the partners, along with GSP International Airport and the S.C. Ports Authority.
