In a written address read on state television to mark Gulf Day, Mojtaba Khamenei framed Iran’s nuclear technology and missile systems as core national identity assets, grouping them alongside nanotechnology, biotechnology, and industrial capacity in describing what 90 million Iranians consider sovereign achievements that will not be surrendered. He described the United States as a historical adversary and declared that foreign forces have no legitimate place in the Persian Gulf.
Khamenei also signaled that Iran intends to maintain its position over the Strait of Hormuz under what he called a new management structure, one he claimed would benefit all nations in the Gulf region. International governments, particularly Gulf Arab states, reject that framing, viewing Iran’s de facto control over the strait as piracy. Shipping companies have reportedly been charged as much as $2 million per vessel to transit the waterway. Iran’s blockade of the strait has cut off roughly 20 percent of global oil and gas supply, and the International Energy Agency has described the closure as the biggest energy security threat in recorded history.
Brent crude peaked Thursday at $126 per barrel before retreating to approximately $114, reflecting continued market anxiety about the closure. A U.S. State Department cable, distributed Tuesday to American diplomats in most countries, solicited support from allied governments for a proposed Maritime Freedom Construct aimed at ensuring open navigation through the strait. France, Britain, and other nations have expressed willingness to participate once the broader conflict is resolved but have declined to act while hostilities continue.
Iran’s current stockpile includes approximately 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity — near-weapons-grade — which analysts say could yield several nuclear devices if further processed. Tehran maintains the program is for civilian energy purposes. A recent Iranian proposal would defer nuclear talks until after a formal end to the conflict and resolution of shipping issues, a position the White House has described as a non-starter.
