SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Gerald Modest Jr., a running back at Spartanburg’s Wofford College, picked up his first weekly award from the Southern Conference on Monday, when the league office chose him as its Offensive Player of the Week.
The junior from Miami ran 20 times for 173 yards, the most of his career, as the Terriers beat VMI 41-14 on Saturday, Oct. 17. He crossed the goal line three times on the ground, also a personal best, twice before halftime and once more in the third quarter.
That third-quarter score came on a 65-yard dash, his longest ever and the longest run by any Wofford player since 2023. Modest added three receptions for 17 yards, giving him 190 all-purpose yards for the afternoon.
The other weekly picks went to Mercer linebacker Jyarius Carter on defense and Samford kicker Ty Ippolito on special teams. The award is the fourth weekly league honor for a Wofford player this fall.
Wofford is off this week. The Terriers then play two straight road games, at Samford and at Western Carolina, and come back to Spartanburg on Nov. 14 to face East Tennessee State.
